Health Insurance
A holiday-maker from an EU country visiting Spain and carrying a European Health Insurance Card is entitled to free emergency treatment (this cover is restricted to providing initial care and is not designed to cover situations where longer treatment periods are necessary).
Expatriates living in Spain are not covered by the EHIC scheme and should seriously consider taking out private health insurance.
There are many, many health insurance plans available, each offering different levels of resources and access to medical help. Some schemes provide access to only their associated doctors, others cover home-visits only and not hospital treatment and so on. With some schemes you receive no cover until you have been in the scheme for a specified period while others provide immediate cover.
